Doing the laundry and cleaning up can bring unexpected joy
Many of us fall into a regular routine, but by becoming deeply engaged with mundane tasks and looking at them differently we can break the monotony and even find a little joy.
Here are four ways to experience the joys of every day life:
Make meaning out of the mundane. If you are emptying the dishwasher, instead of thinking of it as a chore you'd father not be doing, use the time to be mindful and present. You can see immediate progress once the dishwasher is empty and get a feeling of accomplishment.
Celebrate at mealtime. If you are cooking you can turn on some music and cook with all five of your senses. Appreciate each step you take. If you are eating with others, its the perfect opportunity to put our devices away and connect with family, friends or coworkers.
Observe your environment. Simply go outside and connect with nature. You can even do this in the city. Feel the bark of a tree, instead of seeing those pigeons as annoying, take some time to observe their behaviour. If you pass by someone, try making a connection by smiling at them.
Be present with things that make you happy. Whether you are taking your dog for a walk, eating a snack, or reading a book, do not get distracted when you are doing something you enjoy. Simply enjoy it.
A simple mindset shift can help you take a mundane task and turn it into an opportunity to be mindful, meditative and find more moments of joy throughout your day.
