Reclaim your ability to manage your emotions and respond to life with a sense of who you are

In our busy world, people expect results instantly and when they do not come it can be aggravating, even for small setbacks, and patience is the only antidote.

Patience is the ability to control your emotions in stressful situations. Some people are naturally more patient than others, but with practice, we can all get better at it.

In a state of impatience you feel stressed and unhappy, and if you do not deal with the stress trigger you can end up in a cycle of impatience and stress.

Patience puts you back in control over your emotions and allows you to conserve energy, and overtime will lead to a higher tolerance threshold and you can find yourself dealing with even the smallest setbacks calmly.

If you find yourself getting frustrated and stressed more than you’d like, some of these ideas might help you control your emotions

  • Identify your triggers. It can be a person or a situation, and once you identify it, it can help you plan how you are going to react next time.

  • Reframe how you think about the situation. Evaluate the risk properly without over exaggerating the consequences.

  • Let go. Instead of dwelling on the irritation, think of something more productive to focus on.

  • Think with your purpose in mind. Remembering the importance of patience, especially when you are feeling stressed can help you in the present moment.

  • Walk away. Some situations do not require an immediate response and walking away gives you more time to control your reactions.

  • Keep practising and identifying your triggers. Getting more patience requires conscious thoughts and your capacity to alter the way you respond in stressful situations will improve when you remain mindful of when it is happening and what the triggers are.
